What worshipping God is not

Text: John 4:23–24 (NIV)

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Introduction

Worship is one of the most essential aspects of the Christian life. It is how we honor, love, and respond to God for who He is. But in today’s culture, many believers have a shallow or even distorted view of worship. We often reduce it to music, mood, or moments.

In this message, we will explore what worshipping God is NOT—so that we can better understand what true worship actually is.

1. Worship is NOT Just Singing Songs

Many think worship only happens during the “praise and worship” part of a church service. While music is a beautiful expression, worship is much more than melody.

🎵 You can sing loud and not worship at all. Worship is not about your voice; it’s about your heart.

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” — Matthew 15:8

True worship continues after the music stops.

2. Worship is NOT an Event or a Performance

Worship is not something we attend like a concert or observe like a performance. God is not looking for spectators; He’s looking for surrendered hearts.

Lights, instruments, and stages may enhance the experience, but God doesn’t look at production—He looks at posture.

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at… the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

You don’t need a microphone to worship. You need authenticity.

3. Worship is NOT About Us

Worship is not about how we feel or what we like. It’s not about the beat, the style, or whether the song gave us chills. Worship is not designed to entertain us—it is meant to exalt God.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30

When we make worship about our preferences, we rob God of His glory.

4. Worship is NOT Limited to a Place

Just as Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John 4, worship is no longer about a mountain or a temple—it’s about spirit and truth.

Worship is not confined to church buildings or Sunday mornings. It is a daily lifestyle—in your home, at your job, in your car, or alone in prayer.

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” — Romans 12:1

Worship happens wherever God is honored.

5. Worship is NOT Empty Rituals

It’s possible to go through the motions—clapping, kneeling, singing—without engaging God at all. Rituals without heart become religious habits, not worship.

“They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” — Matthew 15:9

True worship is marked by relationship, not routine.

6. Worship is NOT a Substitute for Obedience

God is not impressed by lifted hands that come from disobedient lives. Worship without obedience is empty noise.

“To obey is better than sacrifice.” — 1 Samuel 15:22

You can’t truly worship the God you refuse to follow.

Conclusion: So What Is Worship?

Worship is:

  • A response to who God is

  • A lifestyle of surrender and obedience

  • A connection between spirit and truth

  • A daily decision to honor God in all you do

Call to Action: Return to True Worship

Today, God is looking not for perfect voices, but for sincere hearts. Let us lay aside emotionalism, consumerism, and tradition, and return to authentic worship.

“True worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth.”

Make worship your life, not just your lyrics.

Closing Scripture:

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.” — Hebrews 12:28
